Or wheat thrive in the hot, dry desert? These crops don’t usually survive such hostile conditions, but with help from some microscopic sidekicks, they just might one day. By transplanting symbiotic fungi from drought-tolerant or heat-tolerant plants into crops, researchers have turned wimpy species into hardy ones. The find could expand the range of valuable food crops into currently uncultivable areas. Researchers typically think poorly of endophytes, fungi that live their entire lives within plants. Many are pathogens, and plant pathologists are working out how to prevent or get rid of infections. But geneticist Regina Redman and microbiologist Russell Rodriguez of the U.S. Geological Survey in Seattle, Wash-

Cloning of cDNAs encoding SODs from lettuce plants which show differential regulation by arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis and by drought stress.
In the present study three cDNA fragments were cloned using degenerate primers for Mn-sod genes and PCR: two showed a high degree of identity with Mn-sods from plants and the third with Fe-sod. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis down-regulated their expression pattern under well-watered conditions. In contrast, AM symbiosis in combination with drought stress considerably increased the expres...
متن کاملConvergence in mycorrhizal fungal communities due to drought, plant competition, parasitism, and susceptibility to herbivory: consequences for fungi and host plants
Plants and mycorrhizal fungi influence each other's abundance, diversity, and distribution. How other biotic interactions affect the mycorrhizal symbiosis is less well understood. Likewise, we know little about the effects of climate change on the fungal component of the symbiosis or its function. We synthesized our long-term studies on the influence of plant parasites, insect herbivores, compe...
متن کاملاثر قارچ میکوریزای آربوسکولار بر رشد، کلونیزاسیون ریشه و جذب فسفر بزرک (Linum ussitatissimum L.) تحت سطوح مختلف کم آبی
One of the most important limiting factors of crop growth in the arid and semi-arid regions is water deficit. Mycorrhizal fungi is one of the most important microorganisms in the rhizosphere. The effects of these fungi apply via changes on some of the characteristics of roots and nutrients uptake in host plants under drought conditions. In order to evaluate the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal ...
متن کاملEndophytic fungi produce gibberellins and indoleacetic acid and promotes host-plant growth during stress.
We isolated and examined two endophytic fungi for their potential to secrete phytohormones viz. gibberellins (GAs) and indoleacetic acid (IAA) and mitigate abiotic stresses like salinity and drought. The endophytic fungi Phoma glomerata LWL2 and Penicillium sp. LWL3 significantly promoted the shoot and allied growth attributes of GAs-deficient dwarf mutant Waito-C and Dongjin-beyo rice. Analysi...
متن کاملEffects of Rhizophagus irregularis on Photosynthesis and Antioxidative Enzymatic System in Robinia pseudoacacia L. under Drought Stress
Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi colonize roots improving plant water status and tolerance to drought. However, it is not clear whether the presence of AM would affect the photosynthesis and antioxidant gene-enzymes response, which help to alleviate drought stress of the host plant. Here, pot experiments were performed to investigate the effects of Rhizophagus irregularis, an AM fungus, on the...
